There is an energy running through the Emerald City right now that is almost electric. It has been growing in intensity all week. 12th Man flags hang from windows, balconies, and store fronts, on every street. Blue & green dominates the color scheme of everything from clothing to cupcakes. Even the personal care industry is riding the wave of emotion, as women are spending their lunch hour getting a “fanicure”, so they can proudly wave blue & green fingernails. I almost expect Seattle to burst into blue and green flames on Sunday. Seahawks fever is reaching full pitch, as the Super Bowl nears.

The enthusiasm is contagious. It is infecting even me. And that’s saying something. While I’m a passionate person by temperament, I’ve never really been that passionate about professional football. Why now? Why not now? It certainly doesn’t hurt that Russell Wilson is not only an amazing quarterback, but in my opinion, an amazing human being and I like what he stands for in his personal life; I also think it’s the simple connection that takes place when community happens. There is something that happens in a community when they rally together to support a person, a purpose, or a cause. Unity. It is after all, a part of the word, community. There is strength in numbers, yes, but I also see something else happening. The fact that people are coming together and bonding over something, is resulting in a kinder, gentler community. Maybe I’m imagining it, but it seems to me that people are smiling more, even to strangers they pass by on the street. Of course, how can you not smile when people are running around with blue hair and their faces painted green, and it’s not even Halloween? Perhaps the “Seattle Freeze” is thawing under the warmth of the great green & blue hope.

Hope whispers, don’t give up on your dreams.

My hope is that even after the big game on Sunday, people will continue to have faith in their favorite dream team, win or lose. Isn’t it when we’re down and out that we need support the most? In my own life, it’s the people who loved me, stood by me, and believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, that helped me to move out of the losing seasons of my life, and rekindle my dreams. We were born to dream. God gave us big imaginations and the potential to create and accomplish anything. Dreams ignite a fire within the human spirit that can keep us going through the dark times of doubt and difficulties. Dreams come true when we believe, pursue, and persist. Believing means focusing on what’s possible, rather than on what seems impossible. Pursuing means working hard and following our dreams, wherever they take us. Persisting means never giving up, in spite of obstacles or setbacks. Walt Disney said, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Hope keeps dreams alive. Believe. Pursue. Persist. (And Go Hawks!)

What do you dream about?

* Post Super Bowl note: Dreams do come true!
